In the wake of COVID-19 and current restrictions placed on travel in much of the country, Opera NUOVA has creatively developed a Hybrid program of study. While our productions of Dido and Aeneas, Aeneas and Dido, The Crucible and The Music Man will have to wait for another year, the highly sought-after training of NUOVA can be delivered in a creative way that still fulfills our mission of bridging the gap between the academic and professional worlds.
This three-week program will be delivered in cities across the country with live classroom interaction/rehearsal with your cohort but with master teachers providing instruction through an online platform. Together in a room, artists will delve into a variety of disciplines sharing in the energy fostered through collaboration whilst remaining safe in groups of no more than 8 students. NUOVA will take care of all technical logistics so that each room is equipped with a large screen to view instructors. Participants will work live with collaborative pianist and will still get the opportunity to collaborate alongside their colleagues. Each location will have a present faculty member who will act as your go-to contact and representative for NUOVA.
Through many calls with faculty, this program has been vetted and adapted. What has been devised takes the best aspects of NUOVA and offers classes in disciplines you may not normally have access to and which are not offered during the regular spring intensive. This weekly program gives you access to esteemed faculty from across the country and still gives you evenings and 2 full days off a week.
We realize much of the past year has been spent in isolation and while we may not be able to gather all together in one city, we are confident that a mix of online learning and in person interactions with your cohort will invigorate your artistic spirit.
This program will be a three-week program from June 21 – July 10, 2021 for Victoria, Edmonton and Montreal with a final showcase taking place on July 10 or when deemed appropriate by the cohort. A later version of the program will be delivered from July 5- 24 or potentially July 12 -30 for Winnipeg, Toronto and London.
Each week, students will be engaged in 35 hours of training in an exciting array of disciplines including: Yoga, Alexander Technique, Speech (Monologue Work), Acting, Dance, Diction and Acting the Aria or Song, Artists Living, Art of the Voice Over, Acting for the Camera, Private Coaching and Lessons and Mini Master Classes.
At the end of the three weeks each class in each area will perform a showcase of their own creation centered around a given theme. Throughout the programs, time will be reserved on each Friday for students to plan and rehearse elements of their showcase. NUOVA will give each region a budget that can be used to cover incidentals, rent a keyboard or microphone, and record the showcase. Depending on the region, small audiences of close contacts could be allowed to view the showcase in an outdoor setting. All performances will be recorded and shared via the NUOVA channels creating a second “From Coast to Coast” series. Please see here for our previous Coast to Coast Concert Series.
