Poulenc’s La voix humaine is a telephonic chamber opera, a monologue with more emotional power than many larger-scale plays. In 1950’s Paris, we eavesdrop as a stylish and sophisticated woman makes a final phone call to the man who kept her as a mistress. Her new found dilemma is that he has decided to move on, leaving her alone, distraught and suicidal. Dignity turns to despair as we discover that she has already tried to kill herself. She laments: “If you did not love me and were not so awkward, this telephone could easily become a terrible weapon. A weapon that would leave no marks, nor make a noise…”.
