How are you preparing for NUOVA’s program?

My preparation for NUOVA includes learning new repertoire and sharpening my technical skills through my master’s studies at MUN with Dr. Caroline Schiller and David Pomeroy. While the past two years have been unpredictable and challenging for musicians everywhere, my musical training has, thankfully, continued. I was fortunate to have been able to attend Opera NUOVA’s multi-faceted training program last summer and I have been using many of the skills acquired to enhance my practice and training this year. I have been doing lots of meaningful listening and am diving deep into character work as I prepare the music for this summer. I look forward to once again feeling the dynamism that comes with making music collaboratively in person. For me, maintaining balance and wellness amidst pandemic restrictions has been crucial to my success as an artist, and has included time spent engaging in learning about body mapping, Alexander Technique, mindfulness, and constructive rest, and also spending many hours hiking near the ocean, bouldering, hand balancing, and reading.

What attracts you to NUOVA’s programs? Why this year?

My ambition is to craft a multi-faceted career as a musician and teacher and attending Opera NUOVA has been a significant aspiration. I gained so much from last years training intensive program and I am ecstatic to have the opportunity to participate in NUOVA’s full programming this summer as my thirst for collaborative performance longs to be quenched following two years of largely online, masked, and distanced work. I’m particularly attracted to NUOVAs programming because of the emphasis on developing well-rounded musicians through training in many of the various, complex aspects of performance. I’m eagerly anticipating learning and working with esteemed teachers and like-minded colleagues from across Canada and beyond.
