I've been preparing by doing a lot of yoga and going for long walks, working on mindfulness and trying to get my instrument in the best working condition as possible. And listening to lots of new music!
I've consistently been impressed with the work that NUOVA participants have shown, and I want to be part of a program that really kicked me into gear. I am a recent graduate of the University of Alberta's Acting program, and this year I want to go even further in my singing journey.
Sophie May Healey (she/they) is a multidisciplinary artist working in Amiskwaciwâskahikan/Edmonton and Mohkinstsis/Calgary. She holds a BFA in Acting from the University of Alberta, and is overjoyed to return the the world of NUOVA, this time as a program participant. She strives to tell honest stories through her work as an actor, singer, dancer, and writer, exploring ideas of gender, neurodivergence, and identity in theatre, film, clowning, and visual art. Their original neo-bouffon clown works, including Hysteria Winthrop and Sharon the Wellness Hag, have been featured in cabarets and festivals such as Nextfest and SkirtsAFire. She’s also currently hot off the heels of the Ghost River 3-Week National Devised Theatre intensive. When she’s not performing, she can be found drawing, dreaming, and scheming. Recent credits include the Bakkhai in Bakkhai (Bleviss Laboratory Theatre) Mina Harker in Dracula, the Owl in The Birds, the Young Woman in Don Juan Comes Back From the War (Studio Theatre) Claire Holmes in The Secret Garden (Opera NUOVA) and Maisie Merryweather in The Boy Friend (University of Alberta).
